Cloning Motorola RDX & RM Series Radios

Cloning Guide for Motorola radios: RDU2040, RMU2080, RMV2080, RDU2080d, RMM2050, RDU4100, RDV5100, and RDU4160d

What is Cloning?

Motorola Cloning Guide

Cloning is simply copying the internal settings of one radio over to another radio. Cloning will only work between radios of the same model. You can use any of the following methods to clone the RDX and RM series radios:

  1. Clone by connecting two desktop chargers with a cloning cable.
    2.   
  2. Clone using the multi-charger.
  3. Clone using a PC, the software and a PC-to-radio cloning cable.

These instructions apply to the following Motorola radios:

  • RDX series radios: RRDU4100, RDV5100, and RDU4160d
  • RM series radios: RMU2040, RMU2080, RMV2080, RMU2080d, RMM2050

A Little About the Cables Before You Begin

HKKN4027A CPS Cable Kit


  • The CPS Cloning Cable is made to work either with RM Series radios or RDX Series radios.
  • For RM series radios, make sure the cable switch is in “Flash” position.
  • For RDX radios, make sure the cable switch is in “CPS” position and the USB converter provided in the CPS cable kit is attached to the cable

Cloning With Desktop Chargers & a Cloning Cable

With this method you connect two desktop chargers for radio-to-radio cloning.

You need either one of the following cloning cables for this method:

  • For RDU4100, RDU4160d, RDV5100 radios use the RLN6303 Cloning Cable.
  • For RMU2040, RMU2080, RMV2080, RMU2080d, RMM2050 radios use the HKKN4028A Cloning cable.


  1. Before starting be sure you have a fully charged battery in each radio. Also, the chargers do not need to be connected to a power source for this operation.
  2. Unplug the power cables from the chargers.
  3. Connect the chargers together with the cloning cable to each charger’s power port.
  4. Place the new radio that needs to be programmed into one of the chargers.
  5. Turn the radio ON.
  6. On the current Source radio to copy (already programmed):
    1. Hold down the PTT and SB2 buttons simultaneously while turning the radio ON.
    2. SB2 (side button 2) is the bottom button on the left side of the radio.
    3. Continue to hold these buttons down until a tone is heard (around 3 seconds).
    4. Now place the Source radio (radio that is already programmed) into the empty charger.
    5. Press and release SB1 (side button 1) on the Source radio to initiate cloning.
  7. A chirp sound confirms cloning was successful, a bonk sound is heard if cloning was not successful.
  8.  Turn both radios OFF and then ON to exit cloning mode.

Cloning With a Multi-Charger

You need either one of the following multi-chargers for this method:

  • For RDU4100, RDU4160d, RDV5100 radios use the RLN6309 Multi-Charger.
  • For RMU2040, RMU2080, RMV2080, RMU2080d, RMM2050 radios use the PMLN6384 Multi-Charger.
  1. Be sure both radios have fully charged batteries. The multi-charger does not need to be connected to a power source for this operation.
  2. Place the new radio needing to be programmed into Pocket 1 on the charger.  Pocket 1 is on the far left when you are facing the Motorola logo.
  3. Turn the radio on.
  4. Now, holding the Source Radio (the radio you are going to copy):
    1. Hold down the PTT and SB2 (side button 2) simultaneously while turning on the radio. SB2 is the lower button on the radio’s left side.
    2. Continue to hold these buttons down until a tone is heard (approx. 3 seconds).
  5. Place the second radio (Source Radio) in Pocket 2 of the multi-charger (the one already programmed).
  • Press and release SB1 on the Source Radio to initiate cloning. A chirp sound indicates cloning was successful, a bonk sound is heard if cloning failed.
  • Turn both radios OFF and then ON to exit cloning mode.

    • Cloning With a PC & Programming Software

    You can use the Motorola CPS programming software to copy the settings from one radio to another using a Windows PC.

    1. Download the Motorola CPS software and purchase the HKKN4027A programming cable.
    2. Install both the CPS software and driver for the cable onto your Windows PC (no, you cannot use a MAC PC).
    3. Open the CPS software on your Windows PC.
    4. Connect the radio to the PC using the programming cable.
    5. Turn on the radio that is already programmed (the one you will copy from).
      1. Wait for about 30 seconds until you hear a beep that indicates the software has detected the radio.
      2. In the software, click "Read Radio" button on the toolbar. This reads the settings from the programmed radio into the software program.
      3. Wait for the message that says the operation was successful.
    6. Disconnect the radio from the PC.
    7. Connect the new radio you want to program
    8. Turn it on.
    9. Wait for about 30 seconds until you hear a beep that indicates the software has detected the radio.
    10. In the software, click the "Clone Radio

    11. Wait for the message that says the operation was successful.

    12. If you have more than one radio to program, simply repeat steps 9-13 with each new radio.
